Boats, No Fishing
by: Allison

This is a nice shot. Unfortunately it highlights something I've been noticing as I move around the seaside areas. More and more fishing boats seem to be docked, rather than out on the water. We've overfished our waters so badly that some fishermen are saying that it hardly makes sense to go out. Fuel costs are high, and the catch is often too small for it to be cost effective.

In Treasure Beach, many fishing boats are being used for tourist boat tours instead.

I'm glad a marine sanctuary has been set up in Malcolm Bay (near Black River) - apparently this is a nursery area for young fish. Let's hope the fishermen respect the no-fishing zone, and that this will in turn increase fish stocks in the area.
