The Jamaican National Anthem

The Jamaican National Anthem was first used on August 6, 1962, the day of our independence. We sing the Anthem standing at attention, with our hands by our sides.

Here are the words and the sheet music of the National Anthem of Jamaica.

If you would like hear it or sing along, click the play button on the audio controls just above the words.

Click the play button below to hear the first verse, sung by Miss Kenya Salmon, a wonderful young friend of mine from St. Elizabeth. This is Kenya's unaltered voice, not mixed or tweaked in any way. You can even hear me asking her if she's ready for me to play the piano!

I guess we'll do a professional recording sometime, but forgive me for loving this very natural version of our anthem.

Eternal Father bless our land
Guard us with thy mighty hand
Keep us free from evil powers
Be our light through countless hours
To our leaders, Great Defender
Grant true wisdom from above
Justice, truth be ours forever
Jamaica, Land we love
Jamaica, Jamaica
Jamaica, Land we love.

Teach us true respect for all
Stir response to duty's call
Strengthen us the weak to cherish
Give us vision lest we perish
Knowledge send us, Heavenly Father
Grant true wisdom from above
Justice, truth be ours forever
Jamaica, Land we love
Jamaica, Jamaica
Jamaica, Land we love.

The words of the Jamaica National Anthem were written by the Reverend Hugh Sherlock, the music by the Honourable Robert Lightbourne.
